Smoke detectors don’t prevent fires, but they dramatically reduce the risk of injury and death. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms.
Everything in your home, from the lights and kitchen appliances to your HVAC system, depends on electricity for power. When electrical problems arise,…

Those numbers are staggering but not hard to believe, but it’s worth noting that a smoke detector is only worth its weight if it’s actually working. Proper installation, testing, and eventual replacement are crucial.
Many people assume that as long as a smoke detector chirps during a test, then it’s fine. Not quite. The NFPA is clear on this: smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years from their manufacture date. Not from when you installed them – from when they were made!
Why 10 years? Smoke detectors contain sensors that degrade over time regardless of how often they're used. An aging detector might respond to the test button (which only checks the alarm sound, not smoke detection) while completely failing to detect actual smoke.
The installation date and the manufacture date are NOT the same thing. So, how do you check the manufacture date? Simple. Remove the detector from its mounting and check the back or inside the battery compartment. The manufacture date is usually stamped or printed clearly along with other product information.
Keep this in mind. If you schedule a smoke detector replacement or installation, then remember to check the manufacture date before having it installed. It might be manufactured nine years ago, for instance. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
It could be time to replace your smoke detector even if your detector hasn’t reached the 10-year mark. Here are some warning signs you shouldn’t ignore:
Have an electrician come out and inspect your smoke detectors to be safe. The peace of mind alone is worth it. Mr. Electric’s local electricians are on standby to take your call or message today.
People sometimes assume hardwired smoke detectors connected to home electrical systems last longer than battery-operated models. They don't. The 10-year replacement rule applies to all residential smoke detectors regardless of power source.
The benefit of hardwired detectors is that they get a steady supply of power from your electrical systems. Meanwhile, battery-operated ones need to have the batteries replaced every six months.
Smoke detectors are small devices with enormous responsibility. Don’t wait until disaster. Have them repaired or replaced sooner rather than later.
