Energy prices are soaring past the roof and everyone is looking for ways to reduce energy bills at home. Some of the common practices most people embrace to save energy include upgrading appliances, installing LED lights, and switching to tankless systems. However, not many people consider the impact of Daylight Saving Time (DST) on their energy consumption. In fact, a good number of people don’t even know what DST is or how it might affect their energy usage. The electricians at Mr. Electric looks into the complex relationship between Daylight Saving Time and energy consumption.

What Is Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of advancing clocks, typically by one hour, during the warmer months. The idea is to shift daylight hours to better align with people's waking hours, maximizing the use of natural light and potentially reducing energy consumption.  It's a seasonal time change, effectively giving us an extra hour of daylight in the evening during the summer.

How Does Daylight Saving Time Work?

During DST, clocks are moved forward one hour in the spring, usually in March. This means that 2:00 AM becomes 3:00 AM, effectively "losing" an hour. In the fall, usually November, clocks are moved back one hour to standard time.  So, 2:00 AM becomes 1:00 AM, effectively "gaining" an hour. This shift aims to make better use of daylight during the typical workday and leisure hours.

Is Daylight Saving Time Used Everywhere?

No, Daylight Saving Time is not a global practice.  While it's common in many parts of North America, Europe, and Australia, it's not observed in many other regions, including much of Asia, Africa, and parts of South America. Even within countries that use DST, there can be regional exceptions. The decision to implement or abolish DST often involves debates about its benefits and drawbacks.

Can Daylight Saving Time save you energy?

The energy-saving benefits of DST are widely debated. While the idea is to reduce electricity use by shifting our waking hours to coincide with daylight, studies have shown mixed results. Some research suggests small energy savings, while others indicate DST might even increase energy consumption due to changes in heating, cooling, and other energy uses. The actual impact likely depends on various factors, including climate and location.

When Does Daylight Saving Time Start and End in 2025?

In 2025, Daylight Saving Time in the United States (for those areas that observe it) will begin on Sunday, March 9th, 2025, at 2:00 AM.  Clocks will be turned forward one hour. DST will then end on Sunday, November 2nd, 2025, at 2:00 AM, when clocks will be turned back one hour to standard time.  Remember, not all regions of the US observe DST.
